Google Business Profile: the guide for small businesses
=========================================================

What the Business Profile is, why customers see it before your website, and how to set it up, maintain it and turn it into inquiries.

    August 17, 2026

![Google Business Profile: the guide for small businesses](https://flynk.me/images/content/unternehmensprofil-guide.webp) Before anyone opens your website, they have already seen your Google Business Profile: the map, the stars, the opening hours, the photos. For local searches, this profile is your shop window, and it decides whether someone calls or scrolls on.

This guide covers what the profile can do, how to set it up and what regular upkeep gets you. All of it free, directly at Google.

What is the Google Business Profile?
------------------------------------

The Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is your business's listing on Google. It appears in two places: next to the search results when someone looks up your name, and on Google Maps when someone searches for your trade nearby.

The listing shows your address, opening hours, phone number, photos, reviews and the link to your website. Creating and managing it costs nothing.

Why it matters more than most people think
------------------------------------------

For searches like "dentist near me" or "bakery open now", Google shows three map results first, above all regular search results. Those three spots get the majority of clicks and calls.

Whether you appear there depends on the profile: category, completeness, reviews, freshness. Your website plays a part, but the profile is the door opener.

On top of that, many customers call straight from the listing or start navigation without ever visiting your website. The profile is not an add-on to your online presence, it is half of it.

Setup in short
--------------

The full walkthrough is in [Set up your Google Business Profile](/en/blog/set-up-google-business-profile). The short version:

1. Check whether Google already knows your business: if so, claim the listing instead of creating a new one
2. Enter name, category and location at business.google.com
3. Get verified by Google, usually via video or phone
4. Fill in the profile completely: hours, photos, description, services

From signup to visibility takes a few days, verification needs its time.

Upkeep: small but regular
-------------------------

Google favors profiles that are alive. That does not mean posting daily, it means staying reliable:

- **Answer reviews**, all of them, including the good ones. Two sentences are enough.
- **Add photos**, a new one every few weeks: current work, the team, seasonal things
- **Keep hours current**, especially around holidays. Nothing annoys customers more than "open" in the profile and a locked door
- **Use posts** for offers, new services or events

Half an hour a month puts you ahead of most competitors, because most profiles get created once and never touched again.

Reviews: your strongest lever
-----------------------------

Stars are the first thing that catches the eye in a map listing. Here is how to build them:

- **Ask actively**, at the right moment: after a job well done, at the till, in the invoice email. A direct link to the review form lowers the barrier.
- **Answer criticism** calmly and with a solution. Hundreds of future customers read that reply, not just the one person who wrote the review.
- **Never buy reviews** or offer discounts for them. Google detects patterns and suspends profiles, and the damage outweighs any gain.

When something goes wrong
-------------------------

**Lost access?** Use "Own this business?" on the listing to reclaim ownership, Google then checks your authorization.

**Wrong information showing?** Users can suggest edits, and Google sometimes applies them without asking. Check your profile regularly and correct silent changes.

**Want the profile gone or handed over?** Deleting is rarely the right answer, transferring or closing is usually better: the differences are explained in [Delete your Google Business Profile](/en/blog/delete-google-business-profile).

Frequently asked questions
--------------------------

**Does the profile cost anything?** No. Everything described here is free. Calls from "Google partners" charging for management or a "premium listing" are sales tactics, often not even from Google.

**I have no storefront, does this still work?** Yes. As a service provider without walk-in customers, you set a service area instead of an address.

**Is the profile enough, do I even need a website?** The profile brings visibility, the website brings trust: prices, references, your own presentation. Together they work, alone each leaves half the job undone. What a website costs is covered [in this overview](/en/blog/what-a-website-really-costs).

Say it once instead of maintaining it three times
-------------------------------------------------

Opening hours on the website, in the Business Profile and on Instagram: that is three places for the same information, and at some point one of them is wrong.

That is exactly what FLYNK exists for. You say a change once, and your website, Google profile and socials update together. The profile is part of our standard setup, not a paid extra.

 ### You're Paying for a Site That Works, Not One That Just Exists

Most website designers for small business hand over a site that looks finished and goes quiet. One client page had a 2.7 percent quote completion rate and nobody could see it. Then it was rebuilt: 40.5 percent. The lesson is not the rebuild.

Affordable small business website design leaves out the same four things as the expensive kind: lead source, a way to request changes, monitoring and ownership. Here is what each gap costs you.
