Set up your Google Business Profile step by step
==================================================

Visible on Google and Maps in 15 minutes: create the profile, get verified and fill it in properly. Including the mistakes that cost you customers.

![Set up your Google Business Profile step by step](https://flynk.me/images/content/unternehmensprofil-erstellen.webp) When someone searches "hairdresser near me", Google shows the map first, with three businesses on it. Whoever is on that map gets the call. Without a Business Profile, you do not exist for that search.

The profile is free and set up in fifteen minutes. Only Google's verification takes a few extra days afterwards.

First: does Google already know your business?
----------------------------------------------

Search Google Maps for your business name before you create anything. Google often generates listings automatically from directories and user contributions.

If a listing already exists, do not create a new one. Click **"Own this business?"** and claim it instead. A duplicate listing hurts your ranking.

Step 1: Get a Google account ready
----------------------------------

You need a Google account, ideally one tied to your business email. A private Gmail account works too, but remember: whoever holds that account controls your profile.

Step 2: Add your business
-------------------------

Go to [business.google.com/add](https://business.google.com/add) and enter your business name. Use the real name, the one on your storefront.

Stuffing keywords into the name ("Miller Hairdresser Hamburg cheap") violates Google's guidelines. Profiles get suspended for it, and getting a suspension lifted is tedious.

Step 3: Choose your category
----------------------------

The primary category is the single most important decision in the whole profile. It determines which searches you can appear in at all.

Pick the most precise category that fits: "Hair salon" instead of "Shop", "Dentist" instead of "Doctor". You can add secondary categories later.

Step 4: Address or service area
-------------------------------

If you have a storefront, enter the address. If you travel to customers (trades, delivery, mobile services), choose a service area instead: Google then shows your coverage zone rather than an address.

You can combine both, for example a workshop plus the area around it.

Step 5: Contact details and website
-----------------------------------

Add your phone number and website. No website yet? Enter what you have and put the topic on your list: the profile brings visibility, but converting visitors is a job for a page you control.

Step 6: Verification
--------------------

Google wants proof that the business is real and yours. Google picks the method: usually a **video recording** (you film the shop, the sign and something only the owner can do, like opening the till), sometimes phone, email or a postcard to the business address.

Expect a few days until approval. Your profile is not publicly visible before that.

Step 7: Fill in everything
--------------------------

Now comes the part most people skip, and the part that makes the difference:

- **Opening hours**, including holidays
- **Photos**: real pictures of the shop, the team and your work, no stock images
- **Description**: what you do, for whom, since when
- **Services** with prices where it makes sense

Profiles with complete information and current photos get measurably more calls and route requests.

After that: keep at it
----------------------

A profile is not a monument. Answer reviews, add a new photo every few weeks, keep the hours current: that tells Google your business is alive and pushes you up the map.

That ongoing upkeep is exactly what FLYNK takes over: you say a change once, and your website, Google profile and socials update together. For everything else the profile can do, read the [full Business Profile guide](/en/blog/google-business-profile-guide).

 ### You're Paying for a Site That Works, Not One That Just Exists

Most website designers for small business hand over a site that looks finished and goes quiet. One client page had a 2.7 percent quote completion rate and nobody could see it. Then it was rebuilt: 40.5 percent. The lesson is not the rebuild.

A fair comparison. Sunny HQ sells a well-kept WordPress site from $997 plus $199 a month. FLYNK sells the site plus the instrument panel at $649 a month, $0 setup. Real prices, real client data, and one honest case where Sunny HQ is the better pick.

Affordable small business website design leaves out the same four things as the expensive kind: lead source, a way to request changes, monitoring and ownership. Here is what each gap costs you.
