August 9, 2026 ![Transfer your Google Business Profile the clean way](https://flynk.me/images/content/unternehmensprofil-uebertragen.webp) You are switching agencies, selling the business, or the colleague who "did the Google stuff" is retiring. In all three cases your Business Profile needs to change hands, and in all three cases there is a clean way and an expensive mistake. The expensive mistake first: deleting the old profile and creating a new one. That wipes all your reviews and your built-up ranking, for good. Transferring works differently, and it takes less than ten minutes. The three roles in a profile ---------------------------- Google distinguishes access levels: - **Primary owner**: full control, can transfer and delete the profile. Only one person holds this role. - **Owner**: almost all rights, but cannot remove the primary owner. - **Manager**: can maintain content, answer reviews, upload photos. Enough for the daily work. The most important rule that follows: an agency or service provider needs **manager access, not ownership**. The primary owner should always be you, on an account that belongs to you. How to transfer the profile --------------------------- 1. Sign in with the account that manages the profile and search Google for your business name. 2. Open the three-dot menu, choose **"Business Profile settings"**, then **"People and access"**. 3. Add the new person via their email address and pick the role. 4. For the top job: click the person's role and choose **"Primary owner"**. Google asks once to confirm, then the transfer is done. 5. Finally, remove the access that is no longer needed. New owners cannot use some rights immediately, there is a short protection period. That is normal and prevents hostile takeovers mid-dispute. Case 1: switching agencies -------------------------- Before you cancel, check "People and access" to see who holds which role. If the agency is only a manager, simply remove them and add the new one, done. If the old agency is the primary owner, ask for the transfer to your account as part of the cancellation. Serious agencies do this without discussion, it is your profile. Case 2: the old agency will not hand it over -------------------------------------------- It happens, unfortunately. Then request access directly through Google: click "Own this business?" on the listing and submit the request. Google notifies the current owner, who gets a few days to respond. If they do not react, you can often claim ownership directly after confirming the business is really yours. The process takes one to two weeks, but it works. Case 3: handover or sale of the business ---------------------------------------- The new owner receives primary ownership as described above. Do not just hand over the Google account password along with it: better, the new owner uses their own account, and the old one is removed afterwards. Reviews, photos and history survive all of this. That is exactly why transferring always beats starting over. If the business is truly closing instead, [deleting or closing](/en/blog/delete-google-business-profile) is the right chapter. Set it up cleanly once, then relax ---------------------------------- All the trouble in this article comes from one single cause: the profile ran on someone else's account from day one.
