What Most Web Design Packages Don't Include (And Why It Matters)
==================================================================

Affordable small business website design leaves out the same four things as the expensive kind: lead source, a way to request changes, monitoring and ownership. Here is what each gap costs you.

    August 27, 2026

![What Most Web Design Packages Don't Include (And Why It Matters)](https://flynk.me/images/content/web-design-packages-missing.webp) You searched for affordable small business website design and got a quote that felt high anyway. So now you are looking for the catch.

Here it is. Almost every package, cheap or expensive, does three things: design, host, maintain. Then it stops. No leads, no request system, no monitoring, and sometimes not even ownership. This article names the four gaps and what each one costs you in practice.

Affordable means fewer pages, not fewer gaps
--------------------------------------------

Affordable website design for small business usually means fewer pages, a template instead of custom design, and a tighter change budget. That is fair. Less money, less work.

What it does not give you is fewer gaps. In [the full year-one cost breakdown](/en/blog/small-business-website-design-packages), a $3,400 site from Succeeding Small and a $17,000 site from TKG have the same empty column: neither tells you where your enquiries came from. The price changed by $13,600. The gap did not.

So the question is not "how cheap can I go". It is "which gaps am I paying to keep".

Gap 1: you do not find out where your customers came from
---------------------------------------------------------

This is the expensive one.

A package installs Google Analytics at best. That tells you visits. It does not tell you that the enquiry on Tuesday came from Google Maps and the one on Thursday from an ad. Without that split, you guess. And guessing means you fund the wrong channel.

Here is the split for one FLYNK client, a removals company, March to August 2026, straight from their dashboard:

- **268** website form enquiries
- **197 organic** (Google search, Maps, direct)
- **71 paid** (ads)

**74 percent of these enquiries came without paying for a click.** If nobody was tracking this, the owner would look at the ad spend, see enquiries arriving, and assume the ads were carrying the business. They were carrying a quarter of it.

That is a budget decision. You cannot make it without the data, and none of the seven packages in the comparison gives you the data.

The traffic side tells the same story. Here is the same client's FLYNK traffic view, all time: Direct 1,324 visitors, Google 1,268, Facebook 138, and even 31 from ChatGPT. Search and direct carry the site. Ads are a slice.

![FLYNK traffic insights for the client, all time: referrers Direct 1,324, Google 1,268, Facebook 138, chatgpt.com 31](/images/content/flynk-traffic-referrers.webp)

*The client's FLYNK dashboard, Insights, Traffic, period Max. Nothing blurred, nothing personal in it.*

Gap 2: you cannot ask for a change without it becoming a project
----------------------------------------------------------------

New opening hours. A new team photo. A price that changed. Small things.

Most packages have no request system. You email, you wait, or you pay by the hour. Logical Position's Starter plan includes 100 development hours, then it is [$200 an hour](https://www.logicalposition.com/web-design-portland). LDR charges [$800 to $990 per additional page](https://ldrdesignagency.com/website-design/web-design-pricing/).

The cost goes beyond the invoice. It is the change you do not make because asking feels like a hassle. That is how a site ends up with last year's prices on it.

Ask any provider: where do I send a change, and what does it cost? If the answer is "just email us", ask what happened to the last one.

This is what the alternative looks like. Every change for the same client is a task with a type, a status and a priority. 66 of them so far, from a monthly maintenance round to new landing pages. Nothing gets lost in an inbox.

![FLYNK tasks list for the client: 66 tasks with type, status and priority, from change requests to new pages](/images/content/flynk-tasks.webp)

*The client's FLYNK task list. Change requests, page edits and new pages, each with a status.*

Gap 3: nobody is watching whether the site still works
------------------------------------------------------

Maintenance in most packages means updates. Logical Position lists it as "optional monthly maintenance". Hosting they do not provide at all; you bring your own. Most website maintenance plans work the same way: patches and backups, nobody actually looking at the site.

That is not negligence. It is just not what they sold you. But it means when the contact form silently stops sending, or the SSL certificate expires, the first person to notice is a customer. Or nobody.

Compare that with a site someone is watching. Same client: 660 checks, 99.8 percent uptime, a 730-day history, and one critical alert on 7 August when the server timed out. That alert is the point. The next scheduled check caught it and logged it, so somebody knew the same day, not weeks later when a customer mentioned the form was not working.

![FLYNK site health for the client: Healthy, 99.8 percent uptime, 660 checks, 730-day history, one critical alert on 7 August 2026](/images/content/flynk-site-health.webp)

*The client's FLYNK health view. Uptime, checks, and the one alert that got caught.*

How much does it cost to maintain a website properly? The website maintenance cost in most plans is $35 to $165 a month for updates alone. Real monitoring, someone who notices when the form breaks, is rarely in that price. Cheaper than you think if it is included, more expensive than any plan if it is not.

Gap 4: you may not own it yet
-----------------------------

Who owns my website? Read the contract before you assume the answer is you.

LDR's Standard plan: the website is yours [once paid in full, after 8 months](https://ldrdesignagency.com/website-design/web-design-pricing/). Until then it is theirs. Other providers keep the domain registered in their name, which means your Google rankings walk out the door with them if you ever leave.

This one is cheap to check and expensive to get wrong. Ask for it in writing: domain, code and content are mine, from day one.

Why the gap matters more than the price
---------------------------------------

Put the four together and the comparison changes shape.

A $3,400 site you cannot measure is not cheaper than a $4,908 site you can. It is a different trade: less money for less information. Sometimes that trade is right. If you run a bakery with one location and all your customers walk past, you may not need the source of every enquiry.

But if you spend anything on ads, or you are choosing between ads and Google Business Profile, or you want to know whether the site is doing anything at all, the information is the product. The pages are just where it lives.

FLYNK charges $649 a month for the first six months. After that you choose: keep going at $649 with the active work, drop to Standby at $169, or leave with everything. Either way it covers the four gaps: every enquiry with its source in one inbox, a place to send changes with no hourly rate, monitoring, and ownership from day one. The full breakdown is on the [pricing section](/en#pricing).

Three questions before you sign
-------------------------------

These are different from the [six in the packages article](/en/blog/small-business-website-design-packages), so read both.

1. **Of my last twenty enquiries, how many came from ads?** If they cannot answer for their own clients, they cannot answer for you.
2. **Show me where a change request goes.** A form, a dashboard, a ticket. "Email us" is not a system.
3. **What did you notice first on your last broken site, and how?** The answer tells you whether anyone is watching.

 ### You're Paying for a Site That Works, Not One That Just Exists

Most website designers for small business hand over a site that looks finished and goes quiet. One client page had a 2.7 percent quote completion rate and nobody could see it. Then it was rebuilt: 40.5 percent. The lesson is not the rebuild.

A fair comparison. Sunny HQ sells a well-kept WordPress site from $997 plus $199 a month. FLYNK sells the site plus the instrument panel at $649 a month, $0 setup. Real prices, real client data, and one honest case where Sunny HQ is the better pick.
